Lightning Class
Midwest
District
The Lightning Midwest District
is home to six 'one design' racing fleets sailing weekly in Wisconsin,
Illinois and Iowa. Each year the district hosts a District Championship
Regatta which rotates between the fleets and is a qualifier for sailing
in the Lightning North American Championships. In 2006 the Midwest
District Championships are scheduled for June in Milwaukee followed by
the North American Championships in San Diego, CA. The Lightning
NA's is one of the largest one design events in the world with over 100
boats typically sailing. The Midwest District normally expects to qualify
up to nine boats for the NA's based on the number of registered boats sailing
in the district and past participation at the NA's.
The Lake Michigan Trophy is
awarded each year to the skipper who has the best combined finishes sailing
in the Midwest District Championships and any two of the P&T, Wandering
Moose and Evans regattas.
