The Power Fleet was born in 1982. It was most appropriate since
our burgee proudly bears two stars, one symbolizing sail and the
other power. Over the years, like many fleets, the Power Fleet
has had its ups and downs. The high prices of gas in 2008 prohibited
many from participating in taking trips to the various ports along
Lake Michigan’s beautiful shores. As many of you will
recall, gas reached an all-time high of $4.89/gallon for regular
gasoline and diesel came in even higher! This year, however,
prices came down to a not-so-low $3.89/gallon.
The Power Fleet was formed in 1982 under Past Commodore Ray McMullen
and Past Commodore Armando Ingratta. At that time, there were
six boats. Their first Fleet Captain was Ray, followed by Tom
Gilmore, Past Commodore Larry Niemiec and the current Fleet Captain
is Bob Kurz. Since then, many have joined this fleet whose main objective
is “Fun Together”.
But the Power Fleet is not just about the fun, they work hard at
sponsoring several events throughout the year. The many events
sponsored by the Power Fleet are: Pork Chop Dinner (in the
off-season), the After-Fireworks Party on July 3, and the Air and
Water Show Party, St. Patrick’s Day Party, and the very popular
Big Kids Christmas Party which was started by the Power Fleet. Over
the years, other events sponsored by the Power Fleet included Pancake
Breakfasts and the Halloween Party.
Over the past 27 years, there have been many Power Fleet voyages
where many stories were created. Some of the voyages included
trips to Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Michigan City, Indiana; Saugatuck,
Michigan; New Buffalo, Michigan; St. Joe, Michigan; Winthrop Harbor;
and of course, one of our favorites (and closest) spots to meet is
the Playpen right here in Chicago.
Currently there are 25 boaters in the Power Boat Fleet , many of
whom are sail boaters.
The
Power Fleet is looking for boaters who want to take part and maybe
even take charge of a particular voyage. Should you be an interested
and eager to have fun with your fellow boaters, please contact Bob
Kurz, the current Power Fleet Captain at 312-617-1940 to apply for
membership. It’s a great bargain at $30 a year
