Racing at CCYC

Welcome to the Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club racing season. We have a proud history as a successful cruising, racing and social club operated by volunteers - people who love to sail and enjoy sharing their passion of sailing. Our  mission  is  to  encourage  participation  in  the  sport  of  sailboat  racing  at  the  club  level. We  strive  to  create  a  racing  program  that  is  accessible  and  of  interest  to  as  many  club members as possible. Be you a novice or an old salt; a dinghy racer or an offshore cruiser -we are committed to developing and growing the amateur sailor's skills and abilities. There are many alternatives to consider when selecting a sailing venue. Our offshore and one-design fleets offer choices to match virtually any style, format and budget. Welcome to our fleets!  Our Racing Site will connect you to information and notices about the Wednesday Night Beer Can Series, the racing schedule for the season, regattas, RC signups and results.

Racing Series

Wednesday Evening Series

CCYC hosts the Beer Can Series every Wednesday night from May through September.

Benefits of this fun racing program include the following:

  • Introduces sailboat racing to those who are new to the sport in a positive, casual atmosphere.
  • Encourages established and entry-level racing teams to rotate crew positions for skill development
  • Builds team confidence for more competitive weekend races and regattas
  • Creates an opportunity for sailors from area clubs to meet and mingle
  • Provides a viable alternative to Wednesday night darts!

Moonlight Series

Rhodes 19 Sunday Race Series

Starting at twelve noon on Sundays, the Rhodes 19 fleet has three races almost every Sunday through the end of September.  This series is our fleet championship series in which we regularly have about ten boats.  Each boat carries a crew of three people, sailing with jib, main and spinnaker.  Come crew with us.  Contact our fleet captain, John Walter for details at JohnWalter@aol.com

Thursday Night Summer Series- Dinghy

Join the V15 and Laser fleets for some casual but competitive racing on Thursday evenings between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Racing is held on short courses near the harbor to allow 4-5 races per night. If you are new to dinghy racing, hop on board the RC boat for a close look at the action. The V15 fleet has charter boats available, so if you are interested in sailing, contact John or Meghan for more information.

Fall and Spring Frostbite

Every year a hardy group of ILCA/Laser, Rhodes19, and Vanguard sailors of all ages participate in the Fall and Spring Frostbite sessions. Frostbiting in Chicago is a bit different than in some saltwater locations, we have very HARD water during the winter, so we wait until March to start sailing. We rig at 9 am and the races start at 10 am, the plan is to not sail past 12 pm.

We stay fairly close to shore, and thanks to our two junior coaches who man the Marksetbots, RC boat, and the crash safety boat we were able to have safe and fun races. While the Spring Frostbite is coming to an end, our last race is Saturday May 6, we normally get more folks to sail in the Fall. Fall Frostbiting starts Saturday September 30 and runs until November 18, this is by far the best time to sail in Chicago, warmer water and wind! The sign up for Frostbite can be found on our website racing.corinthian.org under Regattas.

CCYC CASRA Regattas

Annual Regattas

Cardboard Regatta, Fundraiser

The CCYC Cardboard Regatta Has been raising funds for local charities while providing the soggiest racing on the lake since 2016.

Teams of Corinthians design, build, decorate, and skipper their racing yachts while being cheered on by the entire harbor community.  Prizes are awarded for the fastest boats, the best costumes, and the best engineering design.

The regatta has become a bookend to the summer racing season taking place each Labor Day.

Red Flannels

The Red Flannels Regatta is open to all small one design fleets of CCYC. The tradition was that it typically occurred at the end of the season when "red flannel" gear was needed to stay warm. Today because of scheduling, it now occurs in August. However the tradition namesake remains.
